في "ذلك النهر الغريب" مجموعة قصص تحاول أن تستوحي الرؤية الطازجة والبكر لعالم الطفولة والمراهقة الأولى، من خلال عين الطفل أو الصبي الذي يتعامل مع الأشياء بكل حرارة ودهشة الأعماق بعيداً عن تصورات ورؤى وقوانين عالم الكبار المفروضة قسراً من الخارج. الأطفال والصبية هنا يجلبون معهم، وقواعدهم الخاصة ويرحلون في الأسطورة، الخرافة والأمثال الشعبية، ويحطمون صوت المنطق البارد، ويتآلفون مع بعضهم عبر أحاسيسهم الصادقة، يكشفون زيف وتراخي عالم الكبار، ويكتشفون مدن الحلم والرحيل إلى المستقبل.
الأبطال هنا يعيشون في مدينة واحدة، في منطقة غنية بالموروث الشعبي والديني والسحري. بقدر ما هي مدينة تعاني من اختناق سياسي واقتصادي واجتماعي، المدينة والمناخ هما البطل الأساس، والأبطال يظهرون في أكثر من قصة من خلال زاوية التقاط مختلفة. ثمة محاولة في هذه القصص، تستهدف العودة إلى البراءة الأولى، إلى الينبوع الأولى، محاولة تسعى من أجل تقييد المعالم الأثرية والقيم الشعبية والفلكلورية التي بدأت تندثر بفعل هجوم المدنية التي تجهز وبخشونة على معطيات مهمة تدخل في تركيب الشخصية الوطنية والقومية.
وتجدر الإشارة أخيراً أن "ذلك النهر الغريب" هي أول مجموعة قصصية تقدم للطفل والمراهق كبطل ضمن مناخ عام شديد التعقيد السياسي والاقتصادي والاجتماعية المرتبط بإشكالات الموروث الشعبي والأسطوري.
