في جديده الشعري "دمٌ على حافة البياض" يستحضر حسين السماهيجي المرأة من خلال الذاكرة، خالعاً ظله عليها، متوحداً بها، ليجعلها في تبادل رمزي للحضور والغياب معاً، وهو يشهر وجعه في علاقة خاصة يتحد فيها مع الشعر. يقول في قصيدته المعنونة "نديم الشعر":
"أنا دمُني بالشعر وحدي ومن حولي . ، سكارى يملأُ الليلُ في ظلهم ظلي. ، يغنون عني .. هل شربت دميْ الذي. ، على سوسنٍ يغفو فأثملُ بي كُليّ. ، وهل نثرت من عطرها في جوانحي. ، فإني فيها لم أزل ذاهلَ العقل. ، أشيرُ إلى قلبي بعيني كلما. ، مسحتُ ظلام الليل بالضوء في الليل (...)".
هكذا يسيح الشاعر بنصه عبر نسيج إيقاعي شفاف يصدر عن ذات شاعرة (عاشقة) في حالةٍ من التوق والإنعتاق تختزل شعريتها في بُنى تساؤلية رومانتيكية خالصة.
يضم الديوان ما يزيد عن الثمانين قصيدة في الشعر العربي الحديث نذكر من عناوينها: "عرش في فراغ اليواقيت" ، "الوحيد" ، "القيروان" ، "كتاب الشذرات" ، "شروخ المرايا" ، "لن تُشفى" ، "القناديل المطفئة" ، "سُكر" ، "لم ينفع العاشق نُصحُ" ، "خطوط الوحي" (...) وعناوين أخرى.
