"دخلنا جدة عبر سورها القديم من باب مكة والظلام قد أحكم من قبضته فغرقت المدينة في ظلام دامس، راعني ما رأيت من دمار حلّ بهذه المدينة المنكوبة، رغم حلكة الليل، بدت الدروب والحارات والأزقة والبيوت والبرحات والحوانيت موحشة وأشبه بمقبرة، كنت أشعر بأن أقدامي تظأ دماءً حارة لجثة مطعونة طعنة نجلاء، كانت تلك الجثة هي جدة، ماذا أتوقع أن أرى.
مدينة صغيرة تقع تحت قصف وحشي ومتوال ليوم كامل تقريباً كيف ستكون حالها ومآلها! ومع ذلك حمد اللّه كثيراً لكون هذا القبطان لم يتسرع فيرسل جنوده إلى جدة. ترى ما الذي جعله يتوقف عن قصفها ولماذا لم ينزل جنوده بها؟ وما الذي يدور بخلده الآن؟ كل هذه الأسئلة كانت تصيبني بالقلق والحيرة في تتبع سير أفكار هذا الرجل".
