لم يكن صالح جوهر يعلم أنه بإنزاله علماً ورفعه علماً آخر، سيفتح باباً على الجحيم. بين قتل القناصل الأجانب وبعض التجّار وقصف البوارج البريطانية لجدّة، بين صراخ الأطفال رعباً وهرب الأهالي في كل اتّجاه، يحاول نامق باشا حقن الدماء وإيقاف الدمار. وبين فتنة المدينة وفتنة جارته الساحرة، يتأرجح منصور التهامي بين الحياة والموت، بين ماضيه الكئيب وتلك الكوّة من الأمل، التي فتحها سكنه قرب بيت «فتنة».
