ومؤلف هذا الكتاب هو الشيح سعد بن عبد الله بن جنيدل أحد الرواد الأوائل في هذا الباب، فهو باحث، أديب، مؤرخ، رحالة، جغرافي، جامع للروايات الشفهية والأشعار الشعبية، ولقد عُرِف الشيخ سعد بن جنيدل بدقّته في تحديد المواضع وربط حاضرها بماضيها والوقوف عليها بنفسه مما أعطى هذا الكتاب طابعاً خاصاً، كما أنّ صدور الكتاب متأخراً جعل المؤلف يطّلع على كثيرٍ من المصادر التي نشرت لاحقاً وأقوال المحققين في نصوصها.
