المعلقات السبع هي من أشهر ما كتب العرب في الشعر القديم، برزت فيها خصائص الشعر الجاهلي بوضوح، والحياة التي عاشها الشاعر وسط قومه، حتى غدت صورة عن حياة بأكملها، فكانت أفضل ما بلغنا عن الجاهليين من آثار أدبية.
لذلك اهتم المدونون بها وكثر شراحها، ومن المعاصرون مؤلف هذا الكتاب أبي الحسين بن أحمد الزوزني في كتابه المعنون "شرح المعلقات السَّبع" ضبط مادته وصححها واعتنى بشرحها الأستاذ علاء الدين الأعلمي، حيث أورد نبذة عن حياة كل شاعر وعصره، وذكر المناسبة التي قال كل شاعر فيها معلقته.
هذا، وقد جاءت المعلقات على وفق بحور الشعر العربي الموزون والمقفى ومنها البحر الطويل والوافر والمدير وغيرها، أما الشعراء الذين يحتويهم هذا الكتاب فهم: امرئ القيس، زهير بن أبي سلمى، طرفة بن العبد، لبيد بن ربيعة، عمرو بن كلثوم، عنترة بن شداد، الحارثة ابن حلزة.
من معلقة امرئ القيس في هذا الكتاب نقرأ: "قفا نبكِ من ذكرى حبيب ومنزلٍ... بسقطِ اللِّوى بين الدَّخول فحَوْمَلِ"... "فتوضح فالمقراةِ لم يعف رسمها... لما نسجتها من جنوبٍ وشمال"...
