في بحثه عن مرآة لهويته المتشظية، يحاول الإنسان أن يجد انعكاس ذاته في اللغة وفي شكلين أساسيين من أشكالها: الفلسفة والأدب. على أن الفلسفة والأدب يبقى كل منهما مسكوناً بالآخر عندما يكون في أرقى تجلياته.
في هذا الكتاب سير عميق للنص الفلسفي والأدبي يقوم على حس مرهف بالجمال وبالإبداع وعلى عمق كبي في التحليل. إن فيه قدرة واسعة على فكيك صور الذات المنعكسة في الأدب والفلسفة وعلى إعادة بنائها وعلى الربط والمقارن بينها من خلال التعابير وأنسجة الرموز التي تحملها. ولقد جعل هذا من الأدب والفلسفة وجهاً وفقاً للكلام، كما جعل من "المرآة" التي نرى الذات فيها مرآة شفافة ومركبة في آن واحد: إن النظر فيها، بحثاً عن الذات يتطلب تنويع الزوايا، بدءاً بتنويع المعارف والمقاربات.
