ما الفلسفة؟... إنه بطرح هذا السؤال نكون فقد لامسنا موضوعاً واسعا، وهو واسع لأنه كذلك، بل وسيظل أيضاً غير محدد لأنه كذلك، بإمكاننا تناوله من وجهات نظر مختلفة أشدّ ما يكون الإختلاف، لكن مع ذلك وفي كل الحالات سنتوصل إلى شيء صحيح.
إن التداخل بين المقاربات الممكنة بإعتبار شاسعة الموضوع، يجعلنا نجاري خطر أن يكون حوارنا غريباً عن مستوى البحث المطلوب.
لذلك يلزمنا أن نحدد السؤال على نحو دقيقٍ جداً، وبهذه الطريقة فقط يمكننا أن ندير حوارنا في إتجاه مضمون، سيتّبع هذا الحوار طريقاً، أقول: طريق، لكن نعترف بأن هذا الطريق ليس وحده الممكن، لذلك يعترضنا إشكال يكون من المشروع طرحه: هل الطريق الذي أريد الإشارة إليه، هو في الحقيقة ذلك الطريق الذي يجعل السؤال والجواب أمرين ممكنين؟.
لكن مع ذلك نوافق على أنه بوسعنا إيجاد طريق يقودنا نحو تحديد للسؤال بشكل أدق، عندما يواجه موضوع حوارنا اعتراضاً وجيهاً، إنه عندما نسأل: ما الفلسفة؟ أنذاك نتكلم عن الفلسفة لكن نبقى وكما هو ظاهر، في مكان خارج الفلسفة، والحال أن هدف سؤالنا هو على العكس: ولوج الفلسفة وإيجاد إقامة فيها من أجل السلوك وفقاً لها، أي "التفلسف".
إن طريق حوارنا يجب أن يجد لنفسه وجهة واضحة، بل في نفس الوقت أن توفر لنا هذه الوجهة الضمان على أننا سنتحرك داخل الفلسفة بدل الدوران من حولها والبقاء خارجها.
هكذا إذن يجب أن يكون طريق حوارنا طريقاً خاصاً وله وجهة معينة، بحيث أن ما تتناوله الفلسفة يكون قريباً وملامساً لنا في كينونتنا نفسها.
