وقد وعى المفكرون العرب هذه الحقيقة منذ وطأ نابليون أرض مصر فحاول بعضهم جاهداً وضع أسس عقلانية لنهضة المجتمع العربي وتأقلمه مع تطورات العصر وعلومه، ومع تجارب الغرب وثقافته، لكن فريقاً آخر منهم ادعى بأن الإستعانة بتجارب الغرب ومفاهيمه للتطور لن ينقذ المجتمع العربي من مآسي التخلف والإنحطاط، وأن المفتاح الحقيقي للخلاص يكمن فقط في تطبيق مبادئ الشريعة الإسلامية لبناء مجتمع عربي إسلامي يحاكي مثالية المجتمع الذي أنشأه الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وصحابته في قلب الصحراء منذ أربعة عشر قرناً…
وقد حاول فريق ثالث الوقوف في الوسط بين الإتجاهين مدعياً أن بالإمكان الإستعانة بعلوم الغرب وحضارته لبناء مجتمع إسلامي متطور دون المساس بجوهر تعاليم الإسلام لأنها لا تعادي العلم والتقدم.
إن هذا الكتاب يعرض أمهات الأفكار حول هذه المشكلة منذ ظهورها مع محمد علي والطهطاوي في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر حتى محاولة حلها عملياً في تجربتي جمال عبد الناصر والإمام الخميني في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين… إنها مشكلة الساعة في الوطن العربي، ومشكلة كل إنسان عربي يقلقه غموض المصير والمستقبل وهنا تكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب.
