إن "مجهود تعريف الدين يتقاطع مع المطلب الليبرالي المعاصر المتمثّل في ضرورة أن يبقى الدينُ مفصولاً عن السياسة والقانون العلم"؛ هذا ما أشار إليه طلال أسد، كجزء من نقده للعلمانية الليبرالية.
يأخذ هذا الكتابُ إنتقادات أسد على محمل الجدّ ويركز على ديناميات السلطة التي تمّت فيها صياغةُ خطابات الدين والعلمانية تاريخياً وتمّ الإحتفاظ بها في سياق هيمنة العلمانية الليبرالية بهذا القدر أو ذاك، وهيمنة القوميين والثقافيين والإمبرياليين، وكذلك المصالح الإقتصادية التي يتوافقون معها.
هذا الكتاب هو مجموعة من المساهمات الفردية والدراسات التي كتبها علماء ودارسون متخصّصون، وكان المفهوم المركزي أو "المصطلح النقدي" الذي وجّه أعمالّهم في هذا العمل هو مفهوم صناعة الدين، إذ يحيل هذا المفهوم في معناه العام إلى الطرق التي يتمّ بها تشكيلُ بعض الظواهر الإجتماعية وإعادةُ تشكيلها في خطاب الدين (أو الأديان) العالمية.
وبعبارة أخرى، يحيل المفهومُ إلى تجسيد بعض الأفكار والتشكيلاتِ الإجتماعيةِ والممارساتِ ومأسستها على أنها "دينية" بالمعنى الإصطلاحي الغربي للكلمة، ويتمّ بذلك إلحاقُها بنظامٍ معرفيِّ دينيٍّ خاصٍّ وبتدابيره السياسية والثقافية والفلسفية والتاريخية.
إن الهدف الأساس لهذا العمل هو دراسة نتائج التبني الإستعماري وما بعد الإستعماري لتجسيدات النموذج الغربي للدين وتبنّي النّخب غير الغربية لمقابله المثير للجدل (العلمانية).
لذلك، يسعى المساهمون إلى النأي بأنفسهم عن التعارض بين الدين والعلمانية الذي يُعتبرُ شيئاً مركزياً لدى أنصار أطروحة العلمنة وأتباعها، وينحازون بدلاً من ذلك إلى أولئك العلماء المهتمّين بإستكشاف مختلف التضمينات الإبستيمولوجية والسياسية لتشكُّلِ الخطابات "العلمانية" و"الدينية" وتبعية بعضها لبعض.
