مؤلف هذا الكتاب، روبرت ر. بالمر من مواليد شيكاغو 1909، أستاذ كرسي التاريخ في جامعة برنستون، ومحاضر في جامعات شيكاغو وكولورادو وواشنطن، وحامل دكتوراه فخرية من جامعة تولوز، وعضو في عدة أكاديميات للدراسات التاريخية، ورئيس جمعية دراسات التاريخ الفرنسي.
وقد أقام في فرنسا فترة طويلة لإستكمال وثائق دراسته عن الثورة الفرنسية، وأشهر كتبه: تاريخ العالم الحديث (1950) وعصر الثورة الديمقراطية (1959).
