تعتبر قوانين النمو النفسي إضافة إلى نظريات علماء النفس في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين موضوع علم نمو الطفل. ويدرس هذا العلم خصائص العمليات النفسية المستقلة عند الأولاد (الحواس، الإدراك، الذاكرة، التفكير، المشاعر، الإرادة...) وأوجه نشاطهم المختلفة (اللعب، المدرسة، العمل...) وكذلك شخصية الطفل ككل أثناء مراحل نموها المختلفة.
يعتبر هذا الكتاب فريد من نوعه لأنه يتناول بالدراسة أكثر من 15 نظرية في نمو الولد وتطوره. كما يقدم مقاربة جديدة في ميدان علم نفس الطفل، وتكمن أهميته في عملية إعادة جمع معطيات متفرقة من أكثر من عشرة مدارس متمايزة في هذا العلم، ومن ثم القيام بدراسة مقارنة بينها. لم تعط النظريات الأساسية (فرويد، بياجه، سكينر، الأهمية القصوى بل نالت النماذج الأخرى، التي تعتبر أقل أهمية، نصيباً وافراً أيضاً.
أعطيت قيمة للعمل وفقاً لإسهاماته في المجالات التالية:
1-الدراسة المعمقة لمختلف نظريات النمو التي اعتمدت مظاهر مختلفة لنمو الكائن بالصيرورة.
2-الطريقة المقارنة المستخدمة لعرض وتقييم هذه النماذج النظرية المنوهة.
التطبيقات التربوية المنبثقة عن أعمال هؤلاء المنظرين.
4-إمكانيات البحث المقترحة التي تؤدي إلى العديد من ميادين البحث التي تكون جاهزة أمام الطلاب والباحثين على حد سواء.
تناول القسم الأول مسائل النمو النفسي وتطور علم نفس الطفل ومناهجه.
وفي القسم الثاني تم تحديد المعايير التي على أساسها ستتم المقارنة بين نظريات النمو.
وبدأ القسم الثالث بمقارنة موجزة بين الطهريين وروس. أما القسم الرابع فقد تناول النظريات التي اعتمدت مراحل النمو. وفي القسم الخامس كيفية تكوين الفكر والكلام (بياجه، فيجوتسكي، كوهليرج...) ثم كانت سيكلوجيا السلوك من بافلوف إلى سكينر في القسم السادس. أما القسم السابع فقد خصص للمقاربة الإنسانية مع ماسلو، بوهلر، وماهرر. تناول القسم الثامن والأخير الاتجاهات الحديثة المعاصرة التي ستؤثر في المستقبل، وصولاً إلى إطلالة على الصحة النفسية
