تتلبس العدالة، كما تلبست بالفعل عبر تطورها في تاريح الحضارة الإنسانية، لبوسات متعددة الطبيعة واللون: فمن "الشبح" كما في الألياذة والمفكرين الإغريق القدماء -وخصوصاً السابقين منهم لسقراط، إلى "المبدأ"، كما في أفلاطون والنظرية السياسية لعصور ما بعد أفلاطون حتى يومنا هذا، ومن السحر المغري كما في أعداد البيثاغوريين الحسابية، إلى الواقع المادي، كما في الإجراءات القضائية في نظرية في العدالة، مثلاً، للمفكر الأميركي المشهور جون رولز.
وتعددت، كذلك، أبعادها: الداخلي والخارجي، والمساوي (الإلهي، والأفقي (أو المسطحي)، والعامودي، أو (الرأسي)، والعلمي الباصم على أرض الواقع بقدميه القويتين، والمتصور، المرفوف بأجنحته المثالية في آفاق الخيال. وهذه تعابير، وإن غير مقصودة، عن متغيراتها.
وأما ثوابتها، فيختزلها واحد فريد: أنها تعبير، وتعبير مضن على الغالب، عن الدفع المستديم، من قبل الإنسان، قاطن هذه الأرض، بقاطرة المدنية بقصد الصعود بها وبواسطتها من سفوح جبل المطامح، جبل الحياة، إلى قممه الشاهقة، حيث يصفو المناخ، يتنفس هو، بفضل ذلك الصعداء، ويتنشق الهواء النقي!
تلك هي قصتها بالاختصار المتمادي: والخيط الذي يربط بين جميع حلقات جنزيرها -(الحبل الشاد لدرجات سلمها بعضها إلى بعض) إنما هو الحلم الجميل، ولكنه في غالبية الأحيان تبين أنه مكلف جداً هكذا أثبت التاريخ: تاريخنا المتداخل مع تاريخها، المؤمل بالأفضل!؟
فسيرتها مع الإنسان هي سيرة طموحة، ومآثر ذلك الطموح سجلت، غالبيتها على الأقل، سجلت باسمها، بتوقيعها، هذا عدا عن أنها تحمل، مع ما تحمل، ملامحها المميزة!!
