اهتم المفكرون العرب منذ القديم بالعلوم والآداب والفنون، وكان اهتمامهم بالأنساب كبيراً مما أنشأ الاهتمام بالأسماء، فمن يتأمل ويستقرئ المكتبة العربية في الآونة الأخيرة، يجد أن كتباً شتى ألفت، أو وضعت لمعرفة الأسماء ومعانيها،؛ منها من جمع طائفة من الأسماء وذكر معانيها، ومنها من زاد على ذلك فوضع الجذر اللغوي للاسم وهو ما سار عليه المؤلف في كتابه هذا، إضافة الى ذكر بعض الأسماء الدخيلة أو المعرّبة.
لقد حرصت المؤلفة في هذه الموسوعة أن تقدم الأسماء بحسب الحروف الأبجدية المعروفة ليكون تناولها ميسوراً، مختارة أحسن الأسماء ومدى ارتباطها بحياتنا وتراثنا وتاريخنا. وبيّنت معناها اللغوي والاصطلاحي الموجود في أمهات المعاجم العربية، مقدمة لها بأسماء الله الحسنى، ولم أهمل اسماً سواءً أكان مركباً أو مضافاً الى اسم الجلالة.
كما جاءت أسماء من اللغة التركية، حتى أن بعضها لم يخل من الأسماء الأوروبية، هذا عدا ما دخل على لغتنا من الأسماء اليمنية والحبشية والهندية والفارسية.
