هذا العمل يستلهم سؤالا سبق لماركس أن حاول الإجابة عليه في الثامن عشر من برومير لويس بونابرت ، عن الأسباب التي تقف وراء مجيء شخص متوسط المواهب كلويس بونابرت لقيادة الأمة الفرنسية.
تسعى معاهد البحث لتقديم رؤى جديدة لدور الفرد في التاريخ. يتم، وفقا لكل حالة، تحديد المنابع الرئيسة لتكوّن شخصية القائد صانع الحدث، لمعرفة لماذا تصرف بتلك الطريقة دون غيرها. فدمار هذه البلاد، على سبيل المثال، هو في جوهره حكاية تحكي ما إتخذته شخصية الكتاب وغيرها من القيادات( خاصة بعد 14 تموز) من سياسات جعلت البلاد تنحدر بسرعة تم فيها تعريض كيانها لخطر التفكك والمواطنين لأخطار الموت والجوع.
دون دراسة متروّية لنوعية تلك القيادات يصعب معرفة أسباب ما يحدث في البلاد الآن. ما هو أهم كيف رُوّض الجمهور و قبل التردي، وهو يرى النخب بأنواعها كافة ،قومية أم دينية تتقاسم المغانم؟. جمهور لم يتصاعد ذعره، بل حلّ وقرٌ في آذان أفراده الذين انصرفوا، بعزوف غير مألوف، عن أية مواجهة وأطبقوا عيونهم، كمن يقف أمام حائط من الطوب، أو كأنهم يخشون النظر بعيدا خوفا من الإصابة بمرض يدعى الغيرة على الوطن. زمرة العسكريين ذوي الاقتدار الهابط التي جاءت بعد 14 تموز هي من نسلت شخصية هذا الكتاب كقوة شيطانية وشريرة. لم تكن لدى تلك الزمرة القدرة على خلق مؤسسات توسّع استخدام السلطة وتبعد البلاد عن السيطرة المتوارثة للمؤسسة العسكرية التي جلب ثلاثة منها( الداوود، النايف، سعدون غيدان) شخصية هذا الكتاب إلى أعلى سلطة، سلّموه مصير الأمة والمنطقة، ثم وقفوا أمامه مكتوفي الأيدي، على طريقة رجال العصابات الذين تنتهي المعارك بينهم بإنتصار المجرم الأكثر ذكاء ، الذي سرعان ما يزيل الأقل ذكاء بدون رحمة.
لابد من تأسيس طرح جديد وجدير بالثقة لمعرفة أسباب ظهور هذا النوع من القادة بعيدا عن التفسير الشعبي والحزبي الضيق.
