رواية تحتوي على موضوعات متلازمة: القدر، الفقر، الشعر، الحب، الخيانة، العناد.
الشعر وسيلة حاولت بها والدة البطل أن تتجابه الفقر فتعرضت بسببه للخيانة عندما وقت في حب شاعر كبير أراد لها أن تجعل حياتها ملحقة بأشعاره، خلّف تصرفه أذى بكبريائها فابتعدت عنه، حملتها الأقدار أن تتزوج شرطياً منع عليها الشعر.
كرد على ذلك قررت أن تعوِّل على سلاحها الاخير: العناد الذي أورثته لابنها الموهوب شعرياً، ولمتابعة إنتقامها من زوج أفاض بتوجيه الأذى لها، بعثت بابنها البالغ خمسة عشر عاماً للدراسة في عاصمة البلاد كي ترعى ثأرها، حصلت له حادثة مع مدرس التاريخ فقد فيها قريحته، سلخ من عمره أربعة عقود ينشد إسترجاعها، محاولاته لإستعادتها أكسبت إرادته صلابة الحديد، عندما على أعلى سلطة عادت إليه قريحته؛ لم يغمره إستبشار بعودة في غير أوانها لأنها أودت به في النهاية إلى هلاكه.
الرواية هي حول رحلة الإبن الذي حاول أن يحقق نجاحاً يضمِّد به جروحه وجروح أمه.
