"ثم أنام! أنام طويلاً، وأقول لنفسي أن النوم هو الملجأ الوحيد من الشر. أنام وأفكر بالشر، غير أنني لا أدرك على وجه اليقين بأي شرّ أفكر! بالشر الذي يقترفه الآخرون؟ بالشر الذي أقترفه؟ هل فعلت شيئاً يستحق مثل هذا التفكير، أتساءل بهلع. أفكر وتظهر لي صورة دموية تظهر صورة وتغشاني ما تشبه نوبة من الإغماء، وأتفصد عرقاً، لوقت طويل أتفصد عرقاً، وأفكر لعلها صورة القاتل الطليق؟ القاتل الطليق يلاحقني! يلاحقني القاتل الطليق. يلاحقني أنا. أنا القاتل الطليق، يلاحقني! أنا يلاحقني أنا... وأنام! وأقول لنفسي أن النوم هو الملجأ الوحيد من الشر وأنام. ثم أسمع تلك الطرقات القوية على الباب!... أصداء، ثم يحلّ الضباب! الضباب والصدى يغمرانني حينما يوقفونني على قدمي ويسحبونني نازلين الدرج. إنه هو القاتل الطليق... أسمع الصدى! وطوال هذا الوقت ظنناه إنساناً مسالماً! أسمع الصدى! يا إليه! أسمع الصدى! أسمع أصداء عديدة، ومن خلف الضباب أبصر جيم البليد وبرندن وثيو، بل أبصرهم جميعاً، وأنا منقاد أسفل الدرج... وتتصاعد الأصداء ويتكاثف الضباب... ثم لا أرى شيئاً. لا أرى شيئاً".
"طريق بنتونفيل" رواية تطمح إلى تصوير الإنسان المنقسم، على ذاته والذي يعتريه اكتئاب ثم هروب من الذات ليعود إليها لا مفرّ، من جديد. رواية تتداخل خيوطها رغم بساطة أحداثها التي مسرحها بلاد الإنكليز، ورغم بساطة شخصياتها الثانوية التي كانت جنسياتها عربية وبريطانية، ليس هناك حدث بالمعنى المعروف للرواية، إلا أن ما يسيرها انفعالات الشخصية المحورية التي تتعالى وتيرة تمثيلها في بعض الحالات الحياتية العادية لتخبو شيئاً فشيئاً منثنية إلى داخلها التي تتنازع فيه شخصيات تهرب كل واحدة منها من الأخرى لكن دون جدوى. حالات نفسية يبرزها الروائي من خلال سرديات تأخذ بالقارئ بعيداً إلى عالم التحليل النفسي.
