"كانت ما تزال تمطر، وكان قد حل المساء. ولم يكن ثمة أثر لأي من أحمد أو خالد. وما كانت سأراهم لأتوقع أن ينتظرانني بعد كل ما حدث. وتساءلت إذا ما كنت سأراهم ثانية. تساءلت ما الذي سيقولانه عني. وتمنيت أن يعتبرانني مجنوناً، لكن خالداً كان معتاداً على تصرفاتي الغريبة وما كان ليحسبني مجنوناً. وقررت بأن من الأفضل لي ألا ألتقي بهما ثانية. سأتجنبهما، بل سأتجنب كل الناس الذين كنت أعرفهم من قبل.
فكرت في انه يمكنني البقاء في هذه البلدة. لن أحتاج إلى التكلم مع أحد. نعم، سأبقى في هذا البيت وأعتني بما تبقى من القطط. سأمكث هنا مع القطط إلى أن تنتهي الحرب. سأبقى هنا، صامتاً، أتذكر ما جرى، وقد تنتهي الحرب."
أشخاص "عشية الصمت" خفيفة ومؤلمة وتعيش على هامش الحياة، لذلك تبدو خارجة عن ألبومات في الأدراج، وليس من الصور المعلقة إلى الأبد، على الجدران. مع هذه الأشخاص تعيش واقع الحرب وخارجها، تذهب إلى اليومي والمهمل والإنساني والضعف والوحشة والصمت ثم الصمت والعزلة وترتكب، وهي تفوح برائحة الكراهية ما يسمى الحياة على هامش كبرياء الحرب الجريمة.
