هذا مصنف نادر في مادته ثمين في معالجته حوى بين طياته ذكر لوفيات من مات بين سنة إحدى وتسعمائة للهجرة، وسنة الألف للهجرة من العلماء والصلحاء والقضاة، والأدباء والملوك والإيمان. حصرياً كان أو شافياً، مجازياً كان أو يميناً، روحياً أو هندياً، مشرقياً أو مغربيا، فبدأ بتقديم ترجمة للشيخ عبد الرحمن الكوري وانتهى بترجمة لسعد السويني، وضم إلى ذلك ذكر بعض الحوادث والمجريات والحكايات العجيبة والملح الغريبة، كما ضم ذكر لبعض ما نظم من الشعر النادر. هذا ولم يستوعب الكتاب كل ما وقه في هذا القرن من الحوادث وذلك يعود بحسب قول المصنف "لعدم إطلاعه عليها" وإنما ذكر ما انتهى إليه علمه منها.
