انشغل المؤرخون في حضرموت بكتابة تاريخ القرن العاشر الهجري في أعمال متتابعة كثيرة يلحظها الباحث في تاريخ الحركة الثقافية في ذلك البلد. فبعد أن كتب المؤرخ الخضرمي الهندي العلامة المعيد روس كتابة "النور السافر في أخبار القرن العاشر" أتى بعد المؤرخ "بافقيه" وهو صاحب كتابنا هذا متبعاً أثره وناقلاً عنه العديد من الأخبار المتعلقة بمدينة الشحر خلال هذا القرن مضيفاً إليه ما استقاه من نتف أخرى من مصدرين هامين يعتبران في حكم المفقودين المصدر الأول هو كتاب تاريخ القرن العاشر للمؤرخ باسنجلة، وهذا المصنف هو الذي أعطى كتابنا هذا التخصص في تاريخ الشحر لأن الكتاب المذكور جعله صاحب أساساً في تاريخ تلك المدينة (بندر سعاد) أما المصدر الثاني فهو عبارة عن مسودة مذكرات تاريخية للفقيه بامخرمة، وهو ثروة ثمينة لما حواه من معلومات تاريخية معاصرة لكاتبها تتعلق بأخبار عدن والشحر وحضرموت. جميع هذه الأخبار وسمت كتاب محمد بن عمر الطيب بافقيه بطابع متميز جعله من أشهر الكتب المدونة في تواريخ حضرموت والشحر.
