تطرح رواية (المنارة) علاقة الذات بنفسها، وعلاقتها بالآخر. وبهذا الطرح لموضوع الهوية يحاول الروائي حسن الشيخ أن يرصد تلك العلاقة الهشة بالذات أولاً، وبالآخر ثانياً. وبذلك يكون الصراع نقطة الارتكاز في هذه الرواية. صراع بين شخصيات متحابة، متنافرة في مكان وزمان جديدين.
والرواية من زاوية أخرى، يمكن النظر إليها، أنها في غاية التعقيد الفني، ومنتهى البساطة السردية. أي إنها رواية تجمع النقيضين بامتياز فريد. تلك حكاية مدينتين بكل تفاصيلها... وهي تاريخ لم يكتبه أحد قط إلا الراوي نفسه. تاريخ جديد لمدن تنفض عنها الغبار. فتختلط وقائع الأحداث بالأساطير.
أما أبطال تالك الأساطير التاريخية فإنهم من الناس العاديين، الذين تشكل همومهم، وهواجسهم، وطموحهم، وعرقهم وجه التاريخ الحقيقي.
