ترك لنا المؤرخ وصديقنا حمادي الساحلي إنتاجاً غزيراً يقارب ثلاثين عنواناًك من ترجمات لرسائل جامعية ودراسات وخواطر كتبها أصحابها بالفرنسية فتصدى هو لنقلها إلى العربية غيرة على لغتنا الأم، وهكذا أصبح القارئ العربي بفضله مطلعاً إلى أطوار تاريخ تونس من الإمارة الأغلبية إلى الدولة الحفصية.
وقد شهد له أهل الاختصاص بالأمانة في النقل والتثبت في المقابلة مع سهولة في التعبير، وإثراء الأصل ونظيره العربي -وكثيراً ما نشر النصين جميعاً في طبعة متقابلة- بالتعليق السديد والتوضيح المفيد. فعرفت مهارته فصار مقصد الراغبين في توسيع جمهور قرائهم.
ولم يقصر نشاطه على نقل الكتب التاريخية والأبحاث في السياسة والمجتمع من لغة إلى لغة، فقد ألف أيضاً لنفسه وبنفسه مثل دراسته الطريفة عن الصحافة الهزلية بتونس والدراسات العديدة التي جمعها في كتاب "فصول في التاريخ والحضارة" وكذلك الأبحاث والمقالات كانت تنتظر الجمع والإعداد للنشر فانبرى ابنه محمد العزيز الساحلي فاستخرجها من الدوريات والصحف - وأيضاً من مخلفات والده- وأعدها للطباعة.
معظم هذه الدراسات والتراجم نشرت، في المجلة الصادقية، وقد كان الساحلي عنصراً رئيسياً ومنشطاً فريداً في جمعية القدماء وفي فرعها "نادي المعرفة"، بل كان العمود الفقري للمجلة يجمع مادتها وينوع مواضيعه ويصحح تجاربها.
لكن تعلقه الفطري بالمدرسة الصادقية وحماسه لإيقاظ الجمعية من سبات طويل وبعثه لمجلتها في ثوب جديد، لم يحل دون تعاطفه العميق مع جامع الزيتونة ووليدته "الجمعية الخلدونية" ومعاشرته الدائمة للزيتونيين وجلبهم إلى مشاركة المدرسيين في النوادي الثقافية والمنابر الأدبية وحتى الرحلات الاستطلاعية. ويجد القارئ عينات من هذا الوئام الذي سعى حمادي الساحلي طيلة حياته إلى إقراره، يجدها في الفصل الذي كتبه عن العلاقة بين المؤسستين (الخامس من باب الدراسات) وأيضاً في الترجمتين اللتين يختم بهما باب الأعلام: ترجمة الصادقي عبد الوهاب بكير، وترجمة الزيتوني محمود شمام أطال الله عمرهما.
