يسير مطرقاً ممنّياً نفسه ببعض ما تلتقطه عيناه وحواسه من احتياجات ليست بثانوية، فعصارة المعدة الكاوية لا تستمزجه حين يمرّ برائحة الشواء المنبعثة من حَيِّه، إذ يمضي مجبراً من الشارع ذاته كلّ يوم متأبطاً أوراقه التي ملأها حبراً براقاً، تلك الأوراق لا تنال إعجاب زوجته بهيجة بتاتاً، بل إنّها لا تتوقف عن تقريعه كلّما عاد إليها مطوِّحَ الذراعين، فارغ الكفين.
يتوقف فجأة وكأنّه وجد شيئاً: الفقر، لو كان رجلاً لقتلته، ما أروعك يا سيدي لو أنك فعلت! لماذا تركته يقارع تفاصيل النفس وينتشر بين الناس مروعاً؟
