إن المعجم الجيبي العربي الألماني الذي يضم إلى سلسلة معاجم Langen scheidt الشهيرة يحتوي على ما يقرب من 18000 كلمة من أهم كلمات اللغة العربية الفصحى الحديثة وهي اللغة التي تتصل بتراث اللغة العربية منذ نشأتها قبل الإسلام من ناحية والتي تربط بين البلدان العربية من عصرنا هذا من الناحية الأخرى، إذ هي الوسيلة الأدبية لتعبير المفاهيم والأفكار والشعور من شواطئ المحيط الأطلسي إلى المحيط الهندي وهذا بما فيها من التجدد نتيجة لتطور الحضارة العالمية.
ويستهدف هذا المعجم قبل كل شيء سد حاجات المتعلم والمسافر واعتمد لذلك عند تصنيفه على إحصاء مفردات لغة الصحافة اليومية لإثبات العدد الأدنى من الكلمات الضرورية معرفتها لفهم تحديات الجرائد اليومية والذي يكاد يزيد عن ثلاثة آلاف، وأضيف إلى هذا ما تيسر من لغة الإدارة والتجارة والأدب والنحو حتى وصل إلى الحد المقتضى بحجم المعاجم الجيبية ومع ضرورة الاختصار لم يهمل سرد جميع المعاني المستعملة للكلمة الواحدة وإن كانت أقل استعمالاً لأن المعنى الرئيسي. واتفق الناشر والمؤلف على أن يكون ترتيب جميع الكلمات في هذا المعجم أبجدياً مهما كان أصلها واشتقاقها بخلاف ما هي العادة في معظم المعاجم العربية حيث ترتيب المفردات حسب أصولها فقط.
