هذا المعجم يستهدف في الدرجة الأولى الوفاء بأغراض علمية، يحوي من المادة اللغوية الألمانية ثلاثة أضعاف ما يحويه معجم فارموند، وكل مادة فيه تشمل أيضاً ما له علاقة بها من تعبيرات شائعة الاستعمال ولئلا يكبر حجم المعجم ويتضخم جعل تفسير الألفاظ موجزاً قدر الإمكان، وكثيراً ما اقتصر على كلمة واحدة وافية بالغرض. وأساس هذا المعجم قائم على اللغة العربية الصحيحة الحديثة.
أما المادة اللغوية الألمانية فقد تم الاعتماد في إعدادها "المعجم الألماني" الكبير لموريتس هاينة، وتم زيادة عدد كبير من الألفاظ الدخيلة في الألمانية المأخوذة من لغات أوروبية أخرى، فهي متداولة في الألمانية وقد يصعب فهمها على العربي الذي لا يحسن لغة أوروبية أخرى. أما المادة العربية فقد استعين في إعدادها، في الدرجة الأولى بالمعجم الفرنسي العربي لبيلو، في جزءين، وهو معجم يؤثر العناية بالنواحي العملية.
