إن هذا كتاب أودعتُه فَنّاً من الأمثال السائرة عن العرب، وهو أكثر ما يجري [1/ ب] منها على ألسن الفُصحاءِ، ويختلط بخطابة البلغاء، ويدخل في نوادر الأدباء وبدائع الشعراء، وهو ما جاء من الأمثال على قولهم: "هو أَفْعَلُ من كذا".
قد سبق إلى تأليف ذلك جماعةَ من علماءِ اللغة، فللأصمعي في ذلك كتاب، لطيف الحجم، مقدارُ عشر ورقات، وللحياني أيضاً كتابٌ يقرب من كتاب الأصمعي، وفي آخر كتاب أبي عُبَيْد بابٌ ضَمَّنه بعضَ ما في كتاب الأصمعي واللحياني، وتعقَّب هؤلاءِ محمدُ بن حبيب البصري وألّف في ذلك كتاباً، نقل إليه م في تلك الأصول، وزاد عليها زيادة كثيرة، إلا أن جُلَّ ما أَودع كتابَه من هذه الأمثال يبلغ عددها ثلاثمائة وتسعين مثلاً.
وقد أودعتُ ذلك كلَّه هذا الكتاب، وزدتُ عليه زيادة بلغت بعدد الأمثال ألفاً ومائتي مثل [وَنيِّفاً]، سوى أمثال مولَّدة مزدوجة، جمعتُها في الباب التاسع والعشرين، تبلغ خمسمائة مثل [ونيفا]، فيبلغ عددُ أمثال هذا الكتاب بها ألفاً وستمائة مثل وكَسْرا.
وأَلفتُه على نظام حروف المعجم، ليسهلَ تناولَ ما يُراد منه على ملتمِسه، وختمتُ الكتابَ بنوادر من الكلام، لم يصنِّف في مِثْلها كتاب.
وأقدِّم ها هنا مقدمة تشبه المدخل إلى الكتاب، أَدلُّ فيها على كيفية [تفسير] هذه الأمثال.
