يتضمن كتاب الفصول المختارة من كتب أبي عثمان عمرو ابن بحر الجاحظ طائفة واسعة من النصوص التي انتخبها حمزة بن الحسن الأصفهاني من كتب الجاحظ ورسائله المختلفة، ولم يعتن بتسمية ما اختاره أو الإٍشارة إلى الكتب أو الرسائل التي أخذ منها، مكتفياً بكلمة (فصل) في بداية كل رسالة.
وتنقسم مادة الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أقسام: القسم الأول يشمل مجموعة من الفصول التي سبق أن نشرت ضمن كتب الجاحظ ورسائله، والقسم الثاني يضم مجموعة من الفصول التي وردت بعض فقرها في كتبه ورسائله، والقسم الأخير يضم مجموعة من الفصول الجديدة التي لم يسبق نشرها في أي من آثار الجاحظ المطبوعة.
