جُمعت أسماء العائلات الواردة في هذا الكتاب من مصادر عدّة قليل منها مسموع ومعظمها مقروء، وهي تمثّل أسماء عائلات في جميع الدول العربية دون إستثناء وردت في برامج مختلفة في الفضائيات وفي الصحف وبعض أدلّة الهاتف وأسماء مؤلّفي الكتب التي اطّلعنا عليها وهي كثيرة.
ومن المؤسف أنّ المقروء منها كان دون حركات وعلامات الضبط كالشدّة والسكون، وهذا جعل بعض الأسماء تُقرأ بوجوه مختلفة، فقد يكون الإسم من وزن "فَعيل" أو فُعَيْل"، وقد يكون من وزن "فَعال" أو "فِعال" أو فعّال" إلخ، وقد اجتهدنا في إختيار الوجه الذي رجّحنا أنه المقصود عند تصنيفنا لهذه الأسماء، غير أنّ اختيارنا قد لا يكون دائماً صائباً.
وقد عجبنا من تمسّك أصحاب بعض هذه الأسماء بأسمائهم لك، ولا نلوم من يعتقد أنّ بعض هذه الأسماء ليس حقيقياً، ولكننا نؤكّد للقرّاء أننا لم نذكر في هذا الكتاب إلاّ ما سمعناه أو قرأناه.
وفي الأسماء الإنجليزيّة حذفنا الحرف الذي يُضاف للتّبرؤ من المعنى المعجمي للإسم، مثل Legg أو Lowe أو Woolfe / Woolf/ Wolfe.
وجدير بالذّكر أنّ الأسماء الثلاثة الأخيرة تُلفظ بصورة واحدة ولكّنها من الناحية القانونية أسماء مختلفة.
وإذا تعدّدت معاني اسم ما مثل Light أو Desert فهي ترد في أكثر من موقع واحد حسب معانيها.
وقد صفنت الأسماء العربية في اثني عشر فصلاً، ففي الفصل الأول: التنابز بالألقاب، الفصل الثاني: حقول مختلفة، الفصل الثالث: مهن، الفصل الرّابع: تصغير، الفصل الخامس: نسبة، الفصل السّادس: صيغ، الفصل السّابع: الأنثى في أسماء العائلات، الفصل الثّامن: جموع، الفصل التاسع: أسماء ذات جذر واحد، الفصل العاشر: عائلات حروف، الفصل الحادي عشر: أسماء مركبة (1)، الفصل الثاني عشر: أسماء مركبة (2).
أما الأسماء الإنجليزية فقد وردت في ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الثالث عشر: حقول مختلفة، الفصل الرابع عشر: أسماء مركبة، الفصل الخامس عشر: الأسماء المشتركة في اللغتين، الفصل السادس عشر: أسماء لم ترد في الفصول السابقة.
