قال أفلاطون: "إن الفن يتمم ما تعجز الطبيعة عن إنجازه، وإن الفنان هو من يكشف لنا عما عجزت الطبيعة عن الإفصاح عنه".
خلف هذا الرأي فكرة فلسفية تدور حول وجود "مثل أعلى" لكل كائن في الحياة، وما الظواهر الطبيعية إلا محاكاة تتفاوت قرباً أو بعداً عن المثل الأصلية، فكلما توجهنا بالنقد إلى شكل من الأشكال لنصفه بطول العنق أو انكماش الصدر أو ترهل الخصر اعترفنا في حقيقة الأمر بوجود المثل الأعلى للجمال. وثمة تفسيران لهذا المثل الأعلى للجمال قد لا يثير أولهما الرضا الكامل، بينما يمتزج ثانيهما بشيء من الغموض. ويفترض الأول أنه ما من جسد بشري يحمل صفات الكمال كلها، ومن ثم كان على الفنان أن يختار أكمل الأجزاء من أجساد متعددة ويوائم بينها في شكل واحد، وهو ما لجأ إليه الفنان اليوناني زوكسيس عندما شكل صورة فينوس مستوحياً أحمل خمس عذارى في كروتونا، ثم يذهب ألبرخت دورر فيما بعد إلى أبعد من هذا، فيعترف بأنه استلهم أجساد أكثر من ثلاثمئة فتاة. وهو ما يثير فينا التساؤل عن كنه ذلك النموذج المثالي الذي بمقتضاه انتقى زوكسيس أواطرح عذراواته الخمس وأعناقهن وصدورهن. وحتى إذا افترضنا وجود مثل هذه السمات المثالية في بعض الأفراد فإنه يتعذر تصور جمعها في كيان واحد، إذ أن جمالها مرتبط بوجودها في مكانها الأصلي فإذا نزعناها منه جردناها من إيقاعها الحيوي الذي يمدها بما تتصف به من جمال.
وهذا هو عين الصواب.. فإن لكل عضو جماله في مكانه ونخالف ما قاله أفلاطون أيضاً فالإنسان مثال كامل للجمال مهما حاولنا أن نضيف إليه أو نحذف، ولقد خلق الله الإنسان في ا؛سن تقويم وجعله في أجمل صورة وفضله على جميع خلقه وجعله خليفته في الأرض فكيف يمكن وهو المبدع ألا يكون خلقه على جانب كبير من الدقة والجمال..
وبالعودة لمتن هذا الكتاب نجده يعني بتعليم أهم الطرق المبسطة والمراحل الأساسية لرسم الوجوه بعض الأعضاء التي تحتاج إلى دقة ومهارة وذوق عال، حيث إن المبادئ المبسطة والقواعد السهلة التي ا نطلق منها المؤلف في رسم الإنسان، ووضعها بين صفحات هذا الكتاب تساعد الهواة على التدرب عليها، ويجعله يقارن بين الوجوه المتشابهة من حيث الملامح، وأن يدرس تقاسيم هذه الوجوه ودقائقها... ولا يخفى على القارئ أن لرسم الوجوه طرقاً... يجدها في هذا الكتاب الذي يحتوي بالإضافة إلى الشروح النظرية تطبيقات ورسوم عملية ولوحات فنية لأشهر الرسامين المنقذين لأشهر اللوحات.
