يتفرَّد علم أصول الفقه من بين العلوم الإسلامية بأصالته، وإستقلاليته، فهو علمٌ أفرزته جهود العلماء الإسلاميين عبر العصور، وأصبحتْ (قواعدُهُ) أساساً لعملية إستنباط الأحكام الشرعية.
وقد اهتم الفقهاء الإماميون بدراسة هذا العلم دراسة منهجيّة مُعَمَّقة منذ قرون طويلة، وأصبح إتقان هذا العلم، والإبداع فيه من الشروط الأساسية التي توهّل للإجتهاد في الأحكام، والوصول إلى المرجعيّة الدينيّة العليا.
ونظراً لأهميّة الدراسات الأصولية فقد قضت الضرورة إصدار هذه السلسلة المتخصصة بعرض مسائل علم الأصول على شكل دراسات يمكن أنْ تُسهم في الإستفادة من جهود السابقين، والمقارنة بينها للوصول إلى نتائج أفضل.
ويُعدُّ بحثُ (معالم الفكر الأصولي الجديد) - الذي هو أولى إصدارات هذه السلسلة - مدخلاً مُقارناً لمعالم مدرستين أصوليتين متفردتين في تأريخ الدراسات الدينيّة، تنتمي الأولى لمجدد علم الأصول في عصره الإمام الشيخ مرتضى الأنصاري المُتوفى سنة 1281هـــ/ 1864م.
أما الثانية فمؤسسُها الإمام الشهيد السيد محمد باقر الصدر، أحد كبار الفقهاء المعاصرين (ت: 1400هـ/ 1980م).
