في هذا الهمل سعى الكاتب "شايع الوقيان" إلى تقديم قراءة جديدة ومغايرة في الخطاب الفلسفي بوصفه نشاط عقلي مفتوح.
هي مجموع قراءات تدخل إلى الفلسفة حيناً وتخرج حيناً آخر، تقدم عرضاً لتاريخ التفكير الفلسفي وما تنحضت عنه العقول والتجارب على مر الزمن.
ترتكز هذه الدراسة على نوعين من الكتابة الفلسفية النوع الأول الكتابة من الداخل أي نمط الكتابة الفلسفية المعروف، أما النوع الثاني يأتي كتوضيح أو شرح وتأريخ للفلسفة، وهو ما يستعان به في الكتابة البيداغوجية، أي التربوية التعليمية.
تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من كونه يتعرض لمشكلة تدريس الفلسفة وطرفها ومناهجها في البلدان العربية ولا سيما في المملكة العربية السعودية وخصوصاً أن الخطاب التعليمي خطاب ايديولوجي مغلق وناجز.
يبدأ الكتاب في بابه الأول بالتعريف بالفلسفة يأخذ بالإعتبار القارئ السعودي العام، الذي أخذ أخيراً يقترب من الفلسفة، ثم الحديث عن تاريخ الفلسفة وشرح وعرض الأفكار. أما الباب الثاني فيتحدث فيه الكاتب عن الفسلفة الحديثة، بدءاً بديكارت، ومروراً بكانط وهيجل، وانتهاء بفلاسفة الحياة وهم السلف الحقيقي لمفكري ما بعد الحداثة. ثم الباب الثالث ويتطرق فيه الكاتب إلى الفلسفة العربية –الإسلامية القديمة وفيه ثلاثة فصول الأول يتناول الفلسفة الإسلامية من خارجها أي فترة الترجمة وما قبل الترجمة وفيها يثبت الكاتب أن العقلانية العربية التي أثارها الإسلام هي الطريق الأول والجوهري لتلقي الفلسفة اليونانية والإضافة إليها. أما الفصل الثاني فيتعرض للخطاب الماركسي العربي المعاصر، والفصل الثالث يدرس ويناقش مسائل فلسفية لفيلسوفين عربين قديمين، هما: اين سينا، واين خلدون.
