هذا سفر في أخبار الكرماء في الجاهلية والإسلام، يحمل أدباً وأخلاقاً وتاريخاً واجتماعاً، أفرغه مؤلفه في مصحف واحد وأسماه "المستجاد من فعلات الأجواد" ومؤلفه صاحب نشوار المحاضرة والفرج بعد الشدة القاضي أبو علي المحسن بن علي التنوخي المتوفى سنة 384هـ.
اقتبس المؤلف من مصادر جليلة ومن كتابيه هذين، وكان في المستجاد مدوناً أخبار من مضوا وفي النشوار كتب أخبار من عاصرهم، والمقصد الأول عرض صور الكرماء كما عرض الجاحظ صور البخلاء، فأصاب الغرض وأشياء انطوت في هذا الغرض وجاء كتابه صحيفة منظوم ومنثور جنيت أزاهيرها من حدائق فيها من كل فاكهة زوجان.
وبعد هذا فالمستجاد صورة جميلة من أدبنا القديم مبعث حضارتنا، وهذا هو الفن الذي يقضي علينا الواجب أبداً أن نتذوقه ونتفاوضه، ونرويه ونترواه، لما فيه من عبقة أرواح أجدادنا ومنها ننشق الكمال في اللفظ والمعنى ونمشي على آثارهم فتنشأ شخصيتنا الجديدة، وهو إلى هذا من خير ما نكشف به مقاييس الأخلاق في أمتنا ومعايير عاداتها ومدنيتها.
ولا بد أن سأل القارئ النبيه وهو يتصفح هذه الأخبار: ترى هل كان ما رواه المؤلف بالسند من أخبار الأجواد صحيحاً من كل وجه أم أن بعضها موضوع مصنع قصد به تزيين الكرم للناس وحث الأغنياء على العطاء، على نحو ما يتوخى القصصيون في عصرنا التوسع فيما يضعونه من قصص إرادة التربية والتسلية؟ وأكبر الظن أن أخبار التنوخي ما خرجت عن قصص وقعن، وربما دخل بعضها شيء من المبالغة للتأثير في النفوس والإدهاش بالغرائب.
وأياً كان فأخبار الأجواد التي ألم بها مثالاً من الخلق العربي شاهد عدل على طبائع من رويت عنهم أمثال معاوية ويزيد ومروان وعبد الملك وسليمان بن عبد الملك وعبد الله بن جعفر وعبد الله بن عامر والمنصور والمهدي والرشيد والمأمون والمعتصم والواثق، وما أثر عن رجال العباسيين من البرامكة إلى الفضل بن سهل ويزيد بن يزيد ومعن بن زائدة وأبي دلف العجلي وعكرمة الفياض والمهلب بن أبي صفرة ومن اقتص أثرهم من الوزراء والأمراء وسائر الطبقات.
