"كتاب الأفعال" الذي نقلب صفحاته هو في أصله كتاب "أبنية الأفعال" لمؤلفه لأبي بكر محمد بن عمر بن عبد العزيز المعروف بابن التوطية الذي ألفه في الأفعال وأحوالها النحوية. والكتاب مهم في موضوعه، وجيد في معالجته، إلا أن مؤلفه لم يرتبه، ولم يذكر فيه سوى الأفعال الثلاثية وما دخل عليها من الهمزة، خالطاً في الترتيب والتبويب، وكان أن تناوله ابن القطاع بالاعتناء فكان هذا الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته، حيث قام بترتيبه وتبويبه ليسهل عمل القارئ، متماً ما أغفل عنه ابن القوطية من الأفعال الرباعية الصحيحة والخماسية والسداسية المزيدة، والثنائية المكررة، مرتباً الأفعال الثلاثية ضمن أبواب تريح فكر المطلع وتسهل عمله، حيث رد كل فعل إلى مثله، قارناً كل شكل بشكله ذاكراً ما أغفله من الأفعال الثلاثية والمزيدة بالهمزة والثنائية المكررة، مرتباً كل في بابه ليسهل على القارئ والباحث، طرق البحث فيه، والاستفادة منه.
