لعبت الصحافة في بداية النهضة الفكرية في البلدان الإسلامية دوراً مهمَّاً في بثّ الوعي ونشر الثقافة، ولم تكن مدينة النجف الأشرف - السبّاقة في ميادين العلم والمعرفة - بمعزل عن هذا المولود الجديد، حيث ظهرت فيها عشرات الصحف والمجلات الثقافية والأدبية والإجتماعية والسياسية، وكانت سمتها الغالبة مواكبة الأحداث العالمية أدباً وسياسةً وثقافةً، فصحافة النجف الأشرف كانت مرآة صافية للنشاط الفكري والثقافي والإجتماعي الذي دار في مختلف أنديتها آنذاك.

وكان الأستاذ يوسف رجيب يرى تأخر الثقافة العراقية عن مسألة الصحافة مع ما لها من أهمية في العالم المعاصر، ولذا نراه يقول في مفتتح العدد الأول: "ساءنا ونحن في القرن الرابع عشر (العشرين) عصر الحقائق الناصعة أن نرى جيد حاضرتنا عاطلاً عن زينة الصحف التي لها الأهمية الكبرى لدى الأمم المتمدنة المتشبعة بروح الديمقراطية والحرية والإستقلال".

ولذا انبرى لإصدار جريدة أدبية إجتماعية إنتقادية وأسماها "جريدة النجف" تهدف إلى إستنهاض الكتّاب والمؤلفين لإصلاح الأمور، وقد تجنب الأستاذ يوسف رجيب ما يمسّ السياسة أو الدين أو الآداب، وساعده على ذلك لفيف من العلماء والأدباء ومن أبرزهم الشيخ محمد الحسين كاشف الغطاء (رحمه الله) حيث كان يكتب فيها بأسماء مستعارة فيها مناقشته لأمين الريحاني.
