لم يكتب الناقد الثقافي ريموند وليمز كتابه " الكلمات المفاتيح" على أنه كتاب موسوعي تقليدي يسعى إلى تحديد معاني الكلمات الثابت وإنما كمثقف عام ملتزم على وعي بأن المعاني الثقافية لهذه الكلمات هي مجال نزاع وأن التحول يحدث في العادة، حسب قوله، " داخل اللغة". ما رمت إليه كلماته المفاتيح ليس "تراثا يلقن" وإنما مفردات للإستعمال وللتعبير عما يجول بخواطرنا، وكذلك لتغييرها متى ما وجدنا ذلك ضروريا ضمن مسارنا في صنع لغتنا وتاريخنا.
لا تزال نظرة وليامز للأهمية السياسية والإجتماعية الكامنة في الكلمات والعبارات البسيطة صحيحة اليوم، مثلما كانت قبل ثلاثين عاما. يتجلى ذلك في المعارك التي اندلعت حول عبارات مثل "ليبرالي" و "تعذيب" والتصميم الذكي (معارضة داروين ونظرية النشوء والترقي). واليوم، مثلما كان الوضع في عصر وليمز، يقف المثقف العام على الخطوط الأمامية في هذه المناوشات، فهو يسترجع أو يعارض أو يتبنى معاني الكلمات التي تحدد رؤيتنا للعالم.
بالنسبة للمثقف العام لا تحتدم هذه المناوشات في أبراج عاجية، وكأنها جدل بين الأكاديميين حول المعاني، وإنما يتم خوض تلك المعارك بين عامة الجمهور من أجل السعي إلى تحقيق إدراك أشمل.
