يلقي المؤلف الضوء على حياة نخبة من روّاد الفكر السوداني، وهو بذلك يساعد على دراسة التاريخ الفكري السوداني كما أنه يكشف في الوقت عينه عن معالم الثقافة السودانية في القرن العشرين. ويكتسب هذا الكتاب أهمية وذلك لأن المؤلف كان شاهد عصر لبعض الشخوص الذين تحدث عنهم، كما أنه كان على اتصال بما كتبه بعض الذين تحدث عنهم ولم يشاهدهم، وقد قام بتقييم الكتّاب والشعراء في مضمونهم ومنطلقهم دون إحساس بهم باستخدام المقاييس الفكرية والأدبية وذلك لأن هؤلاء الكتّاب والشعراء عاشوا في فترة لم تنفتح فيها أمامهم منافذ الفكر العالمي، لذا كان من الخطأ إخضاعهم لمقاييس عالمية. وقد عمد المؤلف إلى تسليط الضوء على الجوانب المشرقة لكل شخصية تناولها، وهو إلى ذلك لم يمس أحداً في أدبه أو في سلوكه، وحتى أنه لم يتعرض إلى هفوات أي من هؤلاء الروّاد وهو يقول أنه كفى بهم أنهم كانوا روّاداً فتحوا الطريق لمن بعدهم بعد أن تقلبوا على الصعاب الحجة التي كانت تواجههم.
