هبة الله بن علي بن محمد الحسني، أبو السعادات، الشريف، المعروف بابن الشجري: من أئمة العلم باللغة والأدب وأحوال العرب.
مولده ووفاته ببغداد.
كان نقيب الطالبيين بالكرخ.
من كتبه «الأمالي - ط» في جزأين، أملاه في 84 مجلسا، و «الحماسة - ط» ضاهى به حماسة أبي تمام، و «ديوان مختارات الشعراء - ط» و «ديوان شعر - ط» وكتاب «ما اتفق لفظه واختلف معناه» و «شرح اللمع لابن جني» و «شرح التصريف الملوكي».
وكان حسن البيان حلو الألفاظ.
نسبته إلى «شجرة» وهي قرية من أعمال المدينة

الكتاب هو معجم لغوي للمشترك اللفظي دوّنه المؤلف أبي السعادات بن علي الحسني وجمع فيه من الكلم العربية، ما وجده مبدداً في الكتب اللغوية مما اتفق لفظاً واختلف معنىً ورتب مواضيعه على حروف الألف باء ولم يراع فيه الجذور اللغوية، لكنه اعتمد اللفظية المفردة بمعانيها المختلفة، واستعان لبلوغ هدفه بطائفة كبرى من الآيات والأحاديث والأشعار القديمة والأمثال والأقوال، كحجج وإثباتات لما ذهب إليه في تفسيره وشرحه، ولم يغفل المؤلف ذكر المصادر التي أخذ عنها في كثير من الأحيان، فتارة يذكر اسم الكتاب، وطوراً يذكر اسم اللغوي أو السند الذي أخذ عنه ومن الكتب التي ذكرها: العين للخليل بن أحمد، والنبات للدينوري...
وقد ذيلت المخطوطة بتحقيق لطيف يكون كدليل لفهم معانيها وبلوغ مراميها، وقد تجلى عمل المحقق بترجمة وجيزة لكل علم من اعلام الكتاب، وبتخريج الآيات والأحاديث والأشعار مستعيناً لبلوغ هدفه بالدواوين الشعرية المعروفة، وأمهات الكتب القديمة والمعاجم اللغوية، وكتب النحو وغير ذلك من المصادر ككتب الأمثال.
