كتاب في فقه اللغة والاشتقاق، يقدم آراءً جديدة في طريقة وضع المصطلحات وفق منهجية لغوية عربية صحيحة.
الكتاب في مقدمة ومدخل وثلاثة فصول، ذكر المؤلف في المقدمة حاجة العربية إلى بناء أساس علمي لاشتقاق المصطلحات العلمية، ثم تحدث في المدخل عن طرائق وضع المصطلح ومفهومه وتعريفه ومشكلاته، ورآه يكمن في ثلاث طرائق، الترجمة والتوليد والاقتراض، فعقد لكل من هذه الطرق فصلاً خاصاً بها.
تناول المؤلف في فصل (الترجمة) مدلولاتها ثم مصادرها، وتحدث عن الترجمة الحرفية والترجمة بالمعنى.. ثم خصص جانباً من الفصل للبحث في ترجمة السوابق واللواحق، وختمه بترجمة المختصرات.
وتعرض في الفصل الثاني لموضوع (التوليد) طريقة من طرائق وضع المصطلحات، وأشار إلى نظرة القدماء إلى المولد، ثم إلى نظرة المحدثين إليه، بعدها تكلم على التطور اللغوي والتوليد، والقياس اللغوي في التوليد، وذكر أنواع التوليد الثلاثة، الاشتقاق والارتجال والمجاز، وفصل في ذلك تفصيلاً وافياً.
وفي الفصل الثالث وضح مفهوم (الاقتراض) وبين نوعيه، وهما التعريب اللفظي والدخيل، كما بين مكانتهما في المصطلح.. وألحق بهذا الفصل ذيلاً ذكر فيه مخاطر الاقتراض. الكتاب خطوة هامة في علم المصطلح وتحديده ولطرق اعتماده.
