السؤال المحوري لهذا الكتاب هو: هل يمكن الموائمة بين الإسلام ومتطلبات العصر؟ والجواب على ذلك يتطلب معرفة صحيحة للإسلام الحقيقي كفلسفة اجتماعية وايديولوجية إلهية، ونظام فكري واعتقادي بنَاء، وشامل، يراعي ظروف العصر ومتطلباته والتفريق بين ما هو ناشئ عن التطور العلمي، وبين ظواهر دفيلة على الإسلام أدت إلى تشويه صورته. من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب بمجموع محاضراته ومواده في سبيل أن يتعرف القارئ المسلم على الإسلام الحقيقي. ويستوعب روح قوانينه، ويطلَع على نظامه الخاص في التشريع، حتى تتضح الصورة جليَة عندما يثار هذا السؤال: هل أن الإسلام يصلح لعصر معين أم هو لكل القرون والأعصار، يقود الناس ويهديهم نحو الكمال؟
يضم الكتاب ستة وعشرون محاضرة كان قد ألقاها السيد العلامة مرتضى مظهرَي في مناسبات دينية مختلفة، نقلها إلى العربية "علي هاشم" وراجع نصوصها "ناصر النجفي" وهي في مضمونها محاضرات تربوية قيَمة للسيد مطهَري والذي كان يرى أن وجود المجتمع لا يتم إلاَ خلال العامل التربوي الصحيح. فكان نعم المربَي ونعم المفكر والموجَة نحو دين الإسلام.
وبناءَ على ما تقدم تتطرق موضوعات الكتاب إلى: منشأ تطور متطلبات العصور، المجتمع النامي، حديث حول الإفراط والتفريط، والعقل والإعتدال، وعوامل تطهير الفكر الإسلامي، ومهامَ النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، والإجتهاد والتفقه في الدين، ودراسة عن مفهوم العدالة، وردَ النظرية القائلة بنسبيتَتها، ودراسة للنظرية القائلة بنسبية الأخلاق، والحتمية التاريخية والعدالة، ومواضيع أخرى ذات صلة.
