حين نطالع أشعار الخنساء في الرثاء، ننسى أننا أمام امرأة شاعرة حيث تتحول الأنوثة عندها إلى رجولة وبطولة، فإذا نحن في وسط القتال والمعارك، حيث يتنازل الأبطال ويتصارعون، وإذا الأبيات تتابع قوية صاخبة، منطلقة بوقع ملحميّ شديد حتى نكاد نسمع قرع السيوف وصهيل الخيول.
وحين تتحوّل الخنساء من وصف شجاعة أخويها إلى وصف حالها بعدهما، ترى العاطفة الصادقة المتدفقة تسيطر على كل موقف. وهكذا فإن رثاء الخنساء هو مزيج من شعره ولين، وبكاء وأنين، وشكوى وحنين، قد بلغت بشعرها أعلى مراتب الشهرة، فإذا حزنها الكبير ولوعتها التي لم تنقضِ، جعلاها تغوص في أعماق النفس البشريّة تجتلي الضعف الإنساني أمام قسوة القدر الظالم، والموت الرهيب، مستسلمة حيناً، ورافضة في معظم الأحيان، تمجد القوة والنصر وتبتغي الحياة فلا تلاقي إلا دماراً وهلاكاً وموتاً زؤاماً.
وهكذا فإن الخنساء ملأت الدنيّا نحيباً وعويلاً، وزرعت أشعارها في قلب كل إنسان حزين، وعبرت بأشعارها الرقيقة أصدق تعبير عن مرارة فقدان الأهل والأخوات، وألم الموت، وصورت التجربة الإنسانية المؤلمة أدق تصوير، فكان شعرها خالداً تحسّه، ونتجاوب معه، وننفعل به انفعالاً شديداً. وما يتضمنه هذا الكتاب ما هو إلا شرح لديوان الخنساء وهو من إعداد أبو العباس ثعلب.
