الدراسات التي تتناول الفلسطينيين في الشتات قليلة جداً قياساً إلى الدراسات التي تعني بالشأن الفلسطيني بشكل عام. لكن هذا لا ينفي وجود عدد من الدراسات الهامة التي تعالج وجود الفلسطينيين في المجتمعات المضيفة. وفي هذا السياق تندرج الدراسات التي يضمها هذا الكتاب وهو مؤلف من أوراق قدمها عدد من الباحثين لورشة عمل عقدت في مركز دراسات الشرق الأوسط التابع لكلية سانت أنتوني في جامعة أوكسفورد في مايو 2000.
وقد خلص الباحثون إلى أن الهجرة الفلسطينية إلى أوربا ظاهرة حديثة، وقد تستمر هذه الظاهرة في الحدوث بسبب عدم التواصل إلى حل شامل للقضية الفلسطينية. ومجتمعات الهجرة الفلسطينية في أوروبا متنوعة وخصائصها المشتركة غير محددة ولا متناغمة كلياً، لكنها حركية وتستجيب للظروف.
وهي في عملية تكوين وإعادة تكوين مستمرة. وكما تبين الحالة الفلسطينية فإن حركة التنقل الفلسطيني في معظم الحالات ليست أمراً يمكن وصفه بأنه اختياري بل إن تنقلهم كان بالغالب قسرياً، ويمكن القول إن الفلسطينيين يتميزون بتشرذمهم الذي فاقمته اتفاقية أوسلو وقد أدى هذا إلى سيادة الأنماط التقليدية من العلاقات الاجتماعية وخاصة لدى الفلسطينيين القادمين من لبنان، حيث تراجع دور المنظمات الفلسطينية وظلت حركة الفلسطينيين في ألمانيا مثلاً تدور في الفلك اللبناني.
