يدرس هذا الكتاب ظاهرة الزمن في النص المسرحي، ومساراتها التي تحولت من النص إلى العرض المسرحي.
يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن المسرح واحد من الفنون التي تمتلك عمقها الحضاري والشعبي في آن، وهو يستحق فحص ما لم يفحص منه (الزمن) فدراسته قضية معرفية بالغة الأهمية والتعقيد أيضاً. إنه تجريد من جهة، ومجسد في كل سيء من جهة أخرى. من هنا سعى هذا الكتاب لتحديد ظاهرة الزمن في العرض المسرحي، والإجابة عن كل الأشئلة التي تخص بنية العرض المسرحي ودلالاته.
وعليه تكمن أهمية كتاب (أزمنة المسرح) في أنه الدراسة الأولى التي تتناول ظاهرة الزمن في العرض المسرحي على المستوى الأكاديمي، ودراسة تضع الزمن في المركز من الإستقصاء المعرفي، فهو الظاهرة التي تنصهر فيها عناصرالعرض ضمن علاقة، أو مجموعة علاقات لعناصر لا يمكن إدارتها أو إدراك علاقاتها فيما بينها، لا بتفحص هذه الظاهرة، أما الهدف من هذا الكتاب فيتمركز في تعيين ظاهرة الزمن وإدراكه هيكلاً بانياً للعرض المسرحي، من خلال تأكيد وتحريك الزمن المفترض.
