في ضوء الفهم الإشكالي، المزدوج، الملتبس لمفاهيم "الجماعة، المجتمع، الثقافة" يقدم الكاتب موريس غودلييه ثلاثة مفاتيح لفهم الهويات المتنازعة ويضيف إليها مفهوم الهوية، الأكثر استخداماً في العلوم الإجتماعية وفي خطابات السياسيي ومقالات الصحفيين. ونظراً لاستخداماته المتعددة وفي سياقات مختلفة حاول المؤلف تحديد هذه المفاهيم من خلال دراسته الميدانية لقوم "البارويا" (Baruya) ببابواسيا – غينيا الجديدة، والتي نفذها ما بين عامي (1966-1988)، وجد المؤلف أن "أن البارويا يتحدثون اللغة ذاتها، ولديهم نظام القرابة ذاته، وطقوس التعلم التحضيري نفسها، ويقتسمون مع جيرانهم، سواء كانوا أصدقاء أم أعداء، ما قد ندعوه "الثقافة" عينها". ولكونه عاش بينهم ما يقارب السبع سنوات لاحظ تحولات عميقة لهذا المجتمع ولهوياته الشخصية أو الجمعية أيضاً، لقد أخضع هؤلاء أنفسهم لطقوس تعلم (تحضيري)، تكون الآلهة، وأرواح الطبيعة والأجداد حاضرة وتتعاون مع مالكي الأدوات المقدسة من أجل تعليم الأجيال الجديدة "سياسة" أطلقوا عليها إسم "التسيميا" "لقد اصبحنا ذواتنا نحن عندما أوجدنا التسيميا الخاصة بنا وأخضعنا أبناءنا بأنفسنا للتعلم التحضيري".
يُستفاد من هذا الكلام أن لكل مجتمع أشكال مختلفة للسيادة صاغها على طريقته وفرضها على مجرى التاريخ. إن إدراك ما معنى التسيميا الخاصة بهذا المجتمع (البارويا) لا يختلف كثيراً عما هو في الغرب أو حتى في الشرق بإطار ما يمكن أن ندعوه "بالعلاقات السياسية – الدينية" الإختلاف يكمن فقط في ترجمة المفاهيم الخاصة بكل مجتمع ووضعها في سياقها التاريخي الخاص بها.
في نظري، البشر طبيعياً نوع اجتماعي، وهم لم يحتاجوا، للعيش في مجتمع، إلى إبرام عقد فيما بينهم أو تنفيذ جريمة قتل الأب. لكن البشر لا يكتفون بالعيش في مجتمع. إنهم ينتجون أشكالاً جديدة للوجود الاجتماعي، وبالتالي مجتمعات، وذلك من أجل الاستمرار في العيش. لذلك، عندما يقومون بتحويل أساليب عيشهم، فإنهم يحوّلون طرائق التفكير والسلوك، وبالتالي ثقافتهم.
