يشير جيمس روزينيو الذي يعد من أشهر أساتذة العلاقات الدولية المعاصرين في دراسة صادرة عام 1980 تحت عنوان دراسة الاعتماد المتبادلة إلى أن كتاب النظريات المتضاربة في العلاقات الدولية كان واحداً من بين 26 كتاباً في العلاقات الدولية أجمعت المعاهد والجامعات الأمريكية على أنها أكثر الكتب شمولية وأكاديمية في مجال العلاقات الدولية.
وما شجع الدكتور وليد عبد الحيم لترجمة هذا الكتاب شكوى يرددها الطلاب والباحثون العرب في الجامعات والمعاهد حول النقص الشديد في المراجع النظرية للعلاقات الدولية، بل إن المشكلة التي تواجهه كمدرس للعلاقات الدولية هي النقص في المراجع العربية التي يمكن أن يحيل الطلاب إليها.
ويقدم الكتاب السياسة الدولية على أنها أعقد كثيراً من مجرد كونها مجموعة من "الخدع" التي يتهم رجل الشارع السياسة بها، ولكنه كذلك يحسس القارئ بأولوية متغير القوة في عقول الكتاب وصناع القرار السياسي في الولايات المتحدة خاصة والمجتمع الغربي عامة.
