سفر نفيس، عز نظيره، قام مصنفه يحشد بين دفتيه الأمثال آلافاً وآلافاً، حتى بلغت ستة آلاف من الأمثال، تعداداً... بعضها يرقى إلى الجاهلية الجهلاء، وبعضها يتحدر من معين إسلامي، عذب، نمير!... وينهض أبو الفضل بعبء ما يقدم عليه، نهوضاً، ويشمر عن ساعديه لشرح هذه المثال لغوياً، وتبيان المناسبة التي انطلق منها المثل وسار... وإذ بمعظم مناسبات أمثاله، ماتع، شيق، يبعث على التزيد منها والاستقصاء.
وزيادة في الفائدة، يقوم بترتيب أمثاله على حروف المعجم، تسهيلاً لتناولها، وتقريباً لمتباعدها، فأتى الكتاب يرفل بأبهى حلة وأجملها، ويميس بآنق بيان وأشرقه، على امتداد أبوابه الثمانية والعشرين. ولم يفته ما يقوم على وزن "أفعل"، من الأمثال، وللعرب بهذا الضرب من الأوزان ولع شغوف، فأتى على ذكر ذلك بإسهاب وتوسيع إثر كان باب...
وتعميماً لما ينشد من إفادة، أتى على ذكر الشهير من "أيام العرب"، فأفرد لها باباً هو التاسع والعشرون أما الباب الثلاثون، فأفرده خصيصاً لبعض حكم الرسول والخلفاء الراشدين، والسلف الصالح. أما الباعث على تأليفه، فكان إشارة من "الشيخ العميد الأجل، السيد العالم... أبي علي محمد بن أرسلان".
فهو الذي "أشار بجمع كتاب في الأمثال، مبرز على ما له من الأمثال، مشتمل على غثها وسمينها، ومحتو على جاهليها وإسلاميها" وذلك كما توضح ديباجة الكتاب... ويقوم الميداني بجمع شتيت ما بين يديه، مستعيناً بأبي عبيدة وأبي عبيد، والأصمعي وأبي زيد، وأبي عمرو وأبي فيد، في ما كتبوا في هذا الباب الطريف، فينتقي ويرتب، ويبوب، ويوازن، ويناقش، ويغربل الآراء ممحصاً، محصحصاً، ليهتدي إلى برد اليقين، ويستعين بالشراح أمثال عطاء بن مصعب، والشرقي بن القطامي، وغيرهما.
