بدأت حركة تدوين الأمثال في أوائل حركة تدوين الأدب نفسه، ولعل تاريخ التقاء القرن الخامس بالقرن السدس الهجري، كان قد أذن بظهور كتاب ضخم، جمع الأمثال العربية القديمة كلها أو معظمها، وهو كتاب "مجمع الأمثال" لأبي الفضل أحمد بن إبراهيم الميداني النيسابوري (تاريخ 518هـ) وقد رتب الميداني مادة كتابه على حروف المعجم، وألحق بها ما جاء على صيغة أفعل، كما ألحق بها الأمثال المولدة، وأيام العرب في الجاهلية وأيام العرب في الإسلام، بالإضافة إلى نبذة من كلام النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ومن أحاديث الخلفاء الراشدين وبعض رجال الصحابة والتابعين.
ومنذ ذلك التاريخ أصبح معجم مجمع الأمثال الميداني مرجعاً كبيراً لهذا النوع من الأدب، وهو لا يزال يحافظ على قيمته حتى يومنا هذا، على الرغم من ظهور كتب الأمثال الكثيرة للعلماء والأدباء العرب فيما بعد.
ولهذه الأهمية التي يتمتع بها الكتاب اعتنى الدكتور قصي حسين بتحقيق مادة هذه النسخة التي بين أيدينا من الكتاب، وبالرجوع إلى عمله التحقيقي نجد أنه اعتنى بـ: أولاً: بضبط لغة النص ضبطاً دقيقاً، ثانياً: ضبط الآيات القرآنية الكريمة ضبطاً كاملاً. كما وضبط الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة والشواهد الشعرية والأمثال المستعان بها من المتن، ثالثاً: صنع للكتاب جملة من الفهارس وذلك حتى يسهل على الباحثين جني الفوائد منه، مثل فهرس القرآن الكريم، وفهرس الحديث، وفهرس الإعلام، وفهرس القوافي وفهرس أنصاف الأبيات.
