تعد ظاهرة (النور والظلام) من الظواهر التي شغلت الفكر البشري منذ القدم، ولها جذور ضاربة في حياة البشر فكرياً ودينياً وفلسفياً وإجتماعياً، تتجلى صورها في الأدب على نحو لافت للنظر، فضلاً عن ان الحديث عن (النور والظلام) يعني الخوض في جانب مهم من جوانب الطبيعة ومفرداتها المتمثلة بالشمس والقمر والنجوم والبرق والنار، التي كانت وما زالت حوافز لإبداع الشعراء ومصدر إلهامهم الشعري.
لقد إرتأى الباحث دراسة هذه الظاهرة لدى (البحتري)، لما تكتنزه نصوصه الشعرية من مضامين ثرة قادرة على إبراز الظاهرة والكشف عن أبعادها الدلالية، فضلاً عن أن البحتري لم ينل من الإهتمام ما ناله الآخرون، وأن الدراسات المتوفرة عن الشاعر وشعره لم تلتفت إلى هذه الظاهرة، ولم تدرس ضمن دراسة أكاديمية تفيها حقها.
