يبدأ هذا الكتاب من نقطة الإختلاف بين النقاد والدارسين حول أهمية الإيقاع والخيال في العملية الشعرية، ففريق جعل من الخيال جوهر كلّ شاعريةٍ وفريقٌ اتخذ من الإيقاع البعد الأسمى لكلّ تجربة شعريةٍ، غير أن ميزان الأفضلية في دراستنا يتطلّع إلى نظرةٍ تأمّليّةٍ في هذا الجدل، ولا ترغب هذه الدراسة في تأكيد وجهة نظرٍ نهائية، بل تدعو إلى المساءلة والإثراء والعودة إلى التراث لإكتشافه، ولا يتحقق ذلك إلا في إطار مفاهيم ذهنيةٍ جديدة، تحاول أن تكون إنعكاساً أميناً للوجود الفعلي للحقيقة التاريخية ذاتها، وأن تبتعد عن فرض مفاهيم مسبقةٍ لتصور التراث الشعري، وقراءتهِ دون تعدٍ أو إصدار أحكام.
إن البحث في الإيقاع في الشعر لم يكن وليد الدرس المعاصر، بل هو قديم تمتد جذوره إلى قدم الممارسة الشعرية، ولذلك لن تتناول في هذه الدراسةِ تعريفات الإيقاع وتطوره، وإنما سنحاول البحث عن دلالة الظاهرة الإيقاعية من حيث أبعادها التصويرية، لإعتقادنا أن هذا الجانب يمثل بحقّ عمل الإيقاع وفاعليته؛ فمفهوم الفاعلية هنا يقوم على إظهار أثر الإيقاع الذي يتكوّن من نظام معقد من العناصر المتكاملة في اللغة الشعرية، تتعدد وظائفهُ ويستمد خصائصه من أنظمة أخرى: صوتية، وصرفية، ونحوية، ودلالية، ونفسية، ويقوم على صهر هذه الأنظمة فيما بينها لتشكيل جوهر النص الشعري.
ومن هنا، كانت النماذج الشعرية المختارة في هذه الدراسة تمثل جانباً كبيراً من الدقة والموضوعية وتعبر عن صورةٍ واضحةٍ لإبراز التشكيلات الإيقاعية الفاعلة، فغرض الدراسة هنا قائمٌ على بيان فاعلية الإيقاع والكشف عن آثاره الصوتية والدلالية في التصوير الشعري وقدرته على إثارة المتلقي.
ابتدأت هذه الدراسة من حيث ما انتهت إليه الدراسات السابقة لأنها خطت بخطوات واسعة وعديدة في تطوير مفهوم الإيقاع وتأصيله، وكانت هذه الدراسة قيمة ومفيدة، وقد أفادتنا كثيراً في بلورة أفكار هذه الدراسة ونضجها؛ إلّا أننا نعتقد أن البحث عن فاعلية الإيقاع في التصوير الشعري هو موضوع جديد لم يبحث يعدّ في الدراسات العربية المتخصصة على نحوٍ تفصيلي – حسب علمي – سواءً أكان على المستوى الأكاديمي أم على المستوى التأليف والنشر.
