تعود النظرية النقدية التي حاول المؤلف أن يبسطها في هذا الكتاب إلى أصل قديم: فبعض أبيات المتنبي-في مدائحه لكافور-تصبح بشيء قليل من التوجيه، هجائية في طابعها تناول ابن الحسام هذه النظرية التي تتناول أبياتاً معدودات فتطرق بها إلى أبعد الحدود، وطورها بحيث تشمل جميع كافوريات المتنبي.
وكان مما شجعه على ذلك ما نقله بعض الشراح عن ابن جنّي أن المتنبي قال له: لو شئت لقلبت الكافوريات كلها إلى الهجو. وإذا كان المتنبي قد مات دون أن يحقق هذا الأمر. وأغفل النقاد (حتى ابن جنّي نفسه) تحقيق هذا الأمر، فلا بأس على أن ابن حسام قام بهذه المحاولة.
وفي هذا الإطار أصبحت مهمة ابن الحسام تقوم على أساسين، الأول: أن شعر المتنبي في كافور صور من منبع واحد، إلا أنه مر في طورين: طور الإغماض والإبهام والإضمار والتعمية وهذا يعني أن المتنبي كان "يظهر شيئاً" و"يبطن" شيئاً آخر. وعن هذا المعنى الباطني بحث الناقد. والثاني طور إظهار المضر أو طور التصريح. وفي وضع هذين الطورين موضع المقارنة والمعارضة وجد ابن الحسام "مفاتيح" الحل لدور التعريض والإضمار، فكل ما قاله المتنبي في الدور الأول كشف عنه في الدور الثاني، أما تبيان المقصود أو بنقضه. فتسميته له "بأبي المسك" تسمية للشيء بضده لأنه يعني سواده ونتنه. وهكذا وضع ابن الحسام المفاتيح اللازمة للحل في مقدمة كتابه، ثم انتقل إلى كافوريات المتنبي فقلب ما فيها من مديح إلى هجاء، قصيدة إثر قصيدة.
