يرى الكثير من علماء الاجتماع، أن الإنسان حيوان اجتماعي بالطبع، وهو لا يستطيع أن يحقق مصيره إلا في إطار الجماعة؛ فليس الفرد المنعزل مجرد حقيقة جوفاء لا قيام لها على الإطلاق، بل هو في صميمه مجموعة علاقات اجتماعية، كما أنه ليس هناك ذات بدون العالم، فإنه ليس ثمة ذات بدون الغير، وسواء أكان الغير هو الخصم أم كان هو الصديق الذي أتعاطف معه وأنجذب نحوه، فإنني في كلتا الحالتين لا أستطيع أن أعيش بدونه، ولا أملك سوى أن أحدد وجودي من خلاله. من هذا، فقد أدرك علماء النفس في مرحلة مبكرة العلاقة العضوية بين خبرات تفاعل الفرد مع الآخرين والعمليات النفسية المختلفة، كالإدراك، والتذكر، والانتباه، والخصائص النفسية، كالمرونة، والسيطرة، والخضوع، وقوة الأنا أو ضعفها. فالعمليات النفسية التي تفسر سلوك الأفراد ومشاعرهم وأفكارهم لا تتشكل بمعزل عن خبرات التفاعل بين الأفراد، إذ يتأثر الفرد ويؤثر بهذه الخبرات من خلال تكوين الاتجاهات والقيم والدوافع والاستعدادات والميول السلوكية لديه، والتي تؤثر بدورها على انتباهه وتذكره ومعالجته للمعلومات، إضافة إلى إصدار الأحكام والتقييمات التي يطلقها في المواقف الاجتماعية المختلفة.
